Welcome to the proceedings of 9th Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2008) held at the National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan during Dec- ber 9–13, 2008. The first PCM was held in Sydney in 2000. Since then, it has been held successfully around the Pacific Rim, including Beijing in 2001, Hsinchu in 2002, Singapore in 2003, Tokyo in 2004, Jeju in 2005, Zhejiang in 2006, Hong Kong in 2007 and finally Tainan. PCM is a major annual international conference bringing together researchers, developers, and educators in the field of multimedia from around the world. It covers a wide spectrum of multimedia research, from state-of-the-art theoretical breakthroughs to the practical systems of multimedia analysis and processing. PCM 2008 featured a comprehensive program including tutorials, keynote talks, regular oral presentations, special sessions, and poster sessions. This year, we - cepted 79 papers out of 210 submissions, giving an acceptance rate of 37%. In addition, 39 papers were accepted for poster presentation. The submissions were categorized into five different tracks: multimedia compression, communication and networking, multimedia processing, analysis and retrieval, multimedia databases, systems, and applications, multimedia human–computer interfaces, multimedia security and digital right management, with a total of 210 submissions from 18 countries and regions. Among the five tracks, “multimedia analysis and retrieval” received the most submissions (34% of the submissions). We kindly appreciate the great effort made by the Program Committee members and the additional reviewers in the reviewing of submissions.

The present research explores experimental evaluation of the face localization method using skin color based approach and works on the color images. This method first corrects the used bias by lighting compensation techniques which automatically estimate the references white pixels. The outcome difficulty of localizing the low and high luma skin tones is performed by applying a nonlinear transformation to the YCbCr color space. Proposed method is able to localize skin regions over the face images and thereby identifies the candidate based on the skin patches. The present study continues towards the identification of the most suitable unique class of model and the parameter reductions for elderly fall prevention.

The 55 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from the presentations at the workshops. The 21 papers of the Pacific Asia Workshop on Intelligence and Security Informatics (PAISI 2008) cover topics such as information retrieval and event detection, internet security and cybercrime, currency and data protection, cryptography, image and video analysis, privacy issues, social networks, modeling and visualization, and network intrusion detection. The Pacific Asia Workshop on Cybercrime and Computer Forensics (PACCF 2008) furnishes 10 papers about forensic information management, forensic technologies, and forensic principles and tools. The 24 papers of the Workshop on Social Computing (SOCO 2008) are organized in topical sections on social web and social information management, social networks and agent-based modeling, as well as social opinions, e-commerce, security and privacy considerations.

This book, containing the proceedings of the 2000 Kyoto Symposium on Esophageal Cancer, is an important contribution for all types of physicians interested in both squamous and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. Japan has long been a leader in making advances in understanding the pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, for several decades originally led by Professor Komei Nakayama and his students. It is now clear that Japanese are also beginning to suffer from esophageal adenocarcinoma and Barrett's columnar lined epithelium, thus enabling the Japanese to formulate studies on the pathology, diagnosis, and treatment for the full spectrum of esophageal neoplasms. The authoritativeness of these proceedings is established not only by the long tradi­ tion of Japanese leadership in the field but by the contributions of the principal leaders from the Nakayama school participating in the honorary faculty and local scientific committee.
